The Graduate School of Journalism at U.C. Berkeley is widely regarded as one of the top journalism programs in the United States. The School offers a two-year Masters of Journalism degree to an enrollment of about 120 students at a time, while the summer-only journalism minor serves another 300 undergraduates. The school's emphasis is on mastering a wide variety of communication techniques while learning the highest standards of responsible and enterprising journalism. There are 12 permanent faculty members in the School and many working journalists who serve as lecturers. The School employs an average of 20 temporary and career staff members.
The Sr. Development Director works in an Advancement team to design, develop, deliver, and administer fundraising programs for the School. Taking joint direction from the Dean and the Director of Advancement, the incumbent identifies and cultivates new major gift prospects through researching background information and developing materials, marketing plans, and organizing related programs/events; cultivates, stewards, and solicits major gift prospects. Establishes a strategic plan for meeting annual fundraising goals; partners with the Dean to pursue major gifts by meeting with donors and supporters of the School; enlists School's new advisory board to gain support for fundraising campaigns. Writes proposals for solicitation of individual, corporate, and/or foundation prospects. The incumbent provides advice and guidance for contract and grant acquisition and the acquisition of gifts-in-kind.
As part of a team, plans, organizes, and directs large-scale fundraising campaigns which include multiple components.
Evaluates programs using financial feasibility studies and market research, including planning and evaluating annual solicitation programs and making recommendations for improvements.
Develops long range strategy to ensure fundraising goals are met.
Qualifies major gift prospects and solicits gifts directly. Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met and raises at least $1-2M annually.
Identifies, cultivates, solicits and/or stewards major gift prospects and donors.
Results have a major impact on the overall goals of the program. Develops and manages a portfolio of 100 - 125 major gifts or corporate/foundation relations prospects, with the capacity to give between $50,000 and $250,000.
Makes at least 10 - 15 substantive contacts per month (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship).
Writes proposals for solicitation of individual, corporate, and/or foundation prospects.
May oversee the work of professional and support staff involved in the implementation of multi-component fundraising programs. Recruits, trains, and supports key volunteers who assist in advancement efforts.
May attend functions, meetings and serve on internal/external committees as a representative of the campus.
Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations and public relations.
Advanced knowledge of all aspects of the campus, including relevant issues for both the campus and higher education.
Advanced knowledge of the campus including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, et cetera.
Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
Advanced skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and securing gifts.
Advanced skill to meet predetermined goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, execution and evaluation.
Advanced analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
Skill to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
Works well in a team environment.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Passion, respect and appreciation for journalism mandatory
