Ball State University’s Department of Academic Advising is accepting applications for a professional position as Academic Advisor for Journalism.
Major responsibilities: Serve as the primary academic advisor to approximately 300 upper-division students with an academic major in Journalism; support students in understanding and meeting academic requirements; assist students in maintaining state-mandated four-year degree maps; promote strategies for student success; advise transfer students on program requirements and course equivalencies; serve as referral agent to other university services; facilitate communication between assigned students and the Department of Journalism and the College of Communication, Information, and Media; participate in appropriate events as requested by the Department of Journalism, the Office of Admissions, and the Office of Orientation.
Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree by date of appointment, from an accredited college or university; one year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field.
Ability to work with faculty, administration, and undergraduate students; ability to work in a collaborative environment and to work independently; sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, interpersonal/human relations skills; ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions; ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the university; ability to identify students’ needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals; ability to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred qualifications: Undergraduate academic major or graduate major in an area represented by the Department of Journalism (Advertising, Journalism, or Public Relations); Experience in a higher education environment, familiarity with Ball State curriculum; familiarity with Banner and Degree Works; Knowledge of Journalism department specializations.
