With an intentional focus Description: The Azusa Pacific University Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a media storytelling/journalism faculty member who will teach a mix of introductory and advanced media and journalism classes. Additional responsibilities will include student advising.
The department houses four programs – convergent media/journalism, public relations, design and communication studies - 10 full-time faculty, nearly 20 part-time/adjunct faculty, and approximately 400 major and minor undergraduates. The Media Storytelling/Journalism major offers two emphases for a Bachelor of Arts degree: News and Storytelling, and Sports Journalism. As part of the media program, the department supports a convergent/integrated media environment, known on campus as ZU Media. ZU Media includes a digital and traditional student newspaper (ZU News), digital and traditional magazine (ZU Magazine), a television/online studio (ZU TV), and an online radio station (ZU Radio). ZU Media is housed in a state of the art Convergent Media Center opened in 2018 that includes a fully equipped newsroom, TV studio, audio/podcast studio, and dedicated and integrated computer creative stations/ workspaces. Additionally, the department engages a nationally competitive forensics team, and is a member of two national honor societies (Kappa Tau Alpha and Lambda Pi Eta). The department also offers an M.A. in Strategic Communication.
Specialization: Writing, Reporting, and Storytelling across multimedia platforms.
Responsibilities: This half-time faculty member will teach a mix of introductory and upper-division courses in journalism. The candidate will anchor the development of students’ digital and print media abilities, as well as their understanding of the nature and process of journalism. This faculty member may also provide guidance and mentoring to adjunct faculty teaching journalism courses. Depending on experience and expertise, s/he may also assist in advising the department’s student publications and teach additional courses across the department’s curriculum, including in public relations and communication. Other duties include advising students, participating on committee assignments at the department and university levels, and participating in all faculty meetings.
Level: Assistant/Associate (depending on qualifications)
Qualifications: Professional experience in Media and/or Journalism and a commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence.
Experience: Professional experience in Media and/or Journalism strongly preferred.
Workload: Half-time
