Lecturer in Mass Media - School of Communication and Journalism

The School of Communication and Journalism at Stony Brook University seeks an adjunct instructor to teach Introduction to Mass Media, an introductory required course. The course discusses historical evolution, content, and structural elements of mass media, and also takes a social science research approach to the study of mass communication to enable participants to understand mass media's political, economic, social, and psychological influences on individuals and broader U.S. society. This 100% online course combines asynchronous content with synchronous, virtual class sessions. Responsibilities include facilitating virtual class sessions in accordance with basic course policies and procedures, assessing student performance, submitting timely reports as may be scheduled or required, advising students, and working with the basic course director and other faculty to review and provide input on course-related materials. The candidate is expected to teach 3-6 credits per semester, dependent on course availability and can be available to teach beginning Summer Session 2021.

Required Qualifications: Master's in Mass Communication, Media Studies, or related field. Exceptions may be granted for individuals with a minimum of 18 graduate level credit hours in Communication or related field. Minimum of 2 years teaching experience at the undergraduate level. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Experience working with diverse student populations. Experience using educational technology (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) to facilitate student learning. Experience using virtual conference technology (e.g., Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams). Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Communication or related field. Experience teaching online or hybrid courses at the undergraduate level. Extensive experience using Blackboard and Zoom.
