Staff Writer/Editor, Office of Advancement - Georgetown University
The Staff Writer/Editor writes and edits a broad range of communications aimed at connecting and reconnecting alumni and donors with Georgetown University. Under the direction of the Director of Editorial Operations, they produce sharp, web-friendly news and feature copy for magazines, reports, and websites (giving.georgetown.edu, alumni.georgetown.edu, feed.georgetown.edu) overseen by the Office of Advancement's communications team; curate content for newsletters and assist with web content management; and proofread a wide range of communications to ensure compliance with the Office of Advancement Style Guide. Reporting to the Director of Editorial Operations as member of a multi-disciplinary Communications team that includes editorial, creative, digital, and multimedia professionals, the Staff Writer/Editor has duties that include but are not limited to:
Write content for print and web communications
Write and edit content for print and web communications, including the Georgetown alumni magazine, the Georgetown Health magazine, the Georgetown Giving website, THE FEED, and various stewardship reports
Write sharp, web-friendly, inclusive news and feature copy on a tight deadline with minimal edits and to proactively collect and repurpose existing materials from across the university
Copyedit and ensure compliance with the advancement style guide
Copyedit, fact-check, proofread, and ensure compliance with the Office of Advancement Style Guide across all print and online communications, including marketing materials for highly visible alumni events such as Reunion, Homecoming, and John Carroll Weekend
Curate information for several highly visible e-newsletters
Curate newsletter content for diverse Georgetown University audiences, as well as higher education distribution
Assist with web content management, including locating suitable content assets such as photographs and multimedia
Other duties as assigned
Conduct background research, assist on-site with special events, participate in video production, and take on other projects as assigned.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent
2 to 3 years of experience in writing, editing, or marketing communications
Demonstrated ability to write sharp copy on a tight deadline with minimal edits
Strong writing, copyediting, and communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills such as teamwork
Ability to identify and tell compelling stories about a diverse array of people and topics
Ability to proactivity utilize language and create content that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to effectively managing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
Willingness to proactively reach out to colleagues throughout Advancement and the university to pursue story ideas or to share content; and to take an inclusive lens and approach to interviewing alumni, faculty, staff, students, and donors of all backgrounds and life experiences, while incorporating such perspectives into content
Highly organized, self-directed, and proactive in reviewing analytics and usage data
News writing and/or experience in higher education
Experience with content management systems, HTML, and analytics tools
Research and interviewing experience
