The Office of Communications and Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director of News and Information.
The Assistant Director of News and Information serves as an integral member of the of Office of Communications and Marketing's leadership team. The primary purpose of the position is to serve as the main point of contact for media inquiries; facilitate transparent responses to reporters; lead crisis communications and planning efforts for known, foreseeable, and potential issues that could impact the university's reputation; and set direction for the office and its staff in order to accomplish the marketing and communications goals of the university.

The Office of Communications and Marketing is dedicated to advancing the university's reputation. We craft audience-focused communications based on data, best-practices, and emerging trends. The division employs more than 50 full-time professionals across several cross-functional teams--Creative, Digital, Marketing, News, Special Events, Video, and WUOT 91.9FM.
Serve as communications lead for media inquiries
Collaborate with news and information team and campus partners to research issues and inquiries, and respond quickly, accurately, and with appropriate context
Lead communications through crisis situations, exercising management-level judgment in both internal and external communications responses
Monitor social media and other channels to anticipate and respond to issues in consultation with social media manager, as appropriate
Manage the team's on-call rotation and field inquiries after hours and on weekends to ensure the university is responsive to media
Lead planning efforts for known, foreseeable, and potential media issues
Consult with news and information team and campus partners to prepare campus leadership by developing key messages and issue-specific communications plans
Serve on the campus emergency management team and help execute crisis communications plans as part of the Joint Information Center in the event of a full-scale emergency
Develop and lead media training efforts for key administrators, faculty, and staff
Represent the Office of Communications and Marketing on selected committees, task forces, and ad hoc meetings
Serve as a member of the leadership team for the Vice Chancellor for Communications, provide counsel, and share information across organizational boundaries and with administration, faculty, and staff campus-wide
Serve as a resource for the university community for issues regarding media relations and issues management
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Management-level judgment and leadership ability
Ability to communicate effectively to different audiences, both internal and external, in crisis situations
Knowledge of media landscape, including print, digital, and social
Strong writing and speaking skills
Ability to quickly translate complex information for different audiences
