The Office of University Communications at the University of Connecticut is looking for an experienced writer/communicator with a passion for research, learning, driving the public discourse, and telling great stories about a Top 25 public university. The person we're looking for is deeply curious about the world around them and the role higher education plays in it, but above all, they're interested in people and their stories. This position will entail using tried-and-true skills of reporting and writing on tight deadlines, combined with an understanding and appreciation for how modern audiences get their news and the best ways to reach them.
University Communications has a tremendous opportunity for a writer adept at communicating the relevance of research findings to the public. This person will increase visibility for the research, programs, and people at UConn. Through stories for the University's publications and through media relations, the news writer shares what is happening in UConn's labs and lecture halls with the world. Identifying news, interviewing sources, writing, and pitching stories are all part of the process. Works with colleagues to leverage news across communication platforms - audio, visual, and social media. Supports major public relations functions and facilitates media interactions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Proactively identify and suggest story ideas for coverage on UConn Today, the University's official news source, as well as other University publications such as the UConn Magazine and the UConn Health Journal.
Develop and write timely stories/news releases and media advisories designed to generate positive media coverage and enhance UConn's competitive market position and prominence.
Monitor faculty papers in peer-reviewed journals, as well as faculty presentations at professional conferences, for research opportunities to promote.
Establish and maintain working relationships with statewide, national, and international media, as well as trade publication writers and freelancers, to boost visibility for the university.
Pitch story ideas to media through traditional routes and newer tools such as social media. Research and respond to inquiries from the media.
Develop and maintain working relationships with deans, faculty members and administrators to seek out and pursue news.
Advise and support UConn's representatives regarding working with the media; prepare faculty experts and staff for interviews.
Request and identify photo and video content from UConn sources to leverage with written stories.
Remain abreast of current events in order to leverage opportunities to insert the voices of UConn faculty into media coverage.
Collaborate with colleagues in University Communications to determine the best way to share news and content across platforms.
Plan and participate in special projects such as media training workshops, special events, and news conferences.
Identify and suggest professional opportunities to stay relevant in the field, and participate in those, as approved.
Perform related duties as required.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or public relations.
Minimum five years as a reporter, media relations, or public relations professional, including one year serving as an advanced team member.
Excellent interviewing and writing skills, as demonstrated by a portfolio of clips.
Outstanding record of pitching story ideas - either to an editor at the same, or at a different, publication - as demonstrated by coverage.
Knowledge of news operations and the needs of reporters.
Ability to meet deadlines, work flexible hours, manage and organize workload.
Superior interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
Experience in higher education.
Knowledge of the higher education research process.
Knowledge of pitching on social media.
Demonstrated experience writing in Associated Press style.
This is a permanent, full-time position at the Storrs Campus.
