The American Board of Medical Specialties is seeking a Senior Examination Editor, in our Assessment Programs department.
American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) serves the public and the medical profession by improving the quality of health care through setting professional and educational standards for medical specialty practice and certification in partnership with its certifying Member Boards. These elevate the standards for patient care and care improvements.
The Senior Examination Editor position reports to the Managing Editor, Test Development. The Senior Examination Editor also works closely with the Managing Editor, Technology and Publication and test committees of physician subject matter experts to create high-stakes examinations. This description is not intended to be exhaustive of all duties associated with this role. This is an exempt position.
Primary editing for medical specialty certification examinations to include:
Review for flaws and adherence to principles and guidelines for writing well-structured application of knowledge items
Review for grammar, punctuation, clarity, exam-specific style, and item accuracy
Developmental editing with provision of annotations and suggestions for substantive revisions as feedback to authors
Continuous refinement of editing and test development skills using content knowledge and feedback/mentoring from Managing Editor and test committee members
Secondary review of editing by other staff, including freelance editors and proofreaders, providing appropriate feedback and mentoring
Coding of items and images to content outline/blueprint and multiple classification schemes and other content domains ensuring that codes submitted by authors are accurate and complete
Participate in item writing workshops and other training modalities for new item writers
Develop item-writing assignments for multiple specialties based on blueprint and item pool analysis including resolution of issues related to submission and/or use of the item banking software
Review of newly submitted images to ensure compliance with image guidelines and resolution of issues related to submission and/or use of the image banking software
Facilitate in-person and remote committee meetings with focus on accurate recording of meeting changes, committee decisions, and style-specific issues and provision of guidance regarding best practices for item and form development
Analyze pools to identify items for pool review projects and meetings
Communicate with committees regarding test development issues and projects
Maintain databases of items, images, and metadata in item banking software
Assemble examination forms according to content and statistical targets
Publish and quality control examination forms using item banking software
Produce materials for test development meetings, including drafts of newly written and edited items and examination forms and ancillary materials
Produce materials for key validation and standard setting meetings
Participate in development and maintenance of examination schedules and documentation for assigned examination programs
Archive examination materials and prepare materials for copyrighting
Train and mentor junior staff

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree within a related field of study (English, Journalism, Biology, or other scientific / medical field); Required
Understanding of basic test development concepts and best practices; Required
Demonstrated ability using computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel (Required) and SPSS and an XML editor; Strongly Preferred
Familiarity with item banking software and media editing software; Strongly Preferred
5 years of editorial experience in development of medical examinations; Required
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, M- F, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
