The Editorial Services Department is responsible for editing brochures, mailers, newsletters, invitations, posters, magazines, and journals, as well as the Hofstra website. The Director of Editorial Services and Associate Editor work closely with clients and with the graphic artists in Creative Services to ensure that Hofstra’s message and mission are best communicated. Approximately 1,400 pieces are edited annually, as Word documents, designed publications, and digital documents.
Working under the direction of the Director of Editorial Services, the Associate Editor's main responsibility is to edit text that promotes the University and informs and engages the Hofstra community. This includes but is not limited to editing Word files (using the track changes function), printed layouts, and web pages in a content management system. The Associate Editor is expected to edit for grammar and spelling; suggest revisions, such as changing words or rearranging sentences to improve clarity; verify facts and Hofstra statistics; and work to ensure consistency by applying Hofstra standards and Associated Press Stylebook guidelines. Outside of daily editing tasks, special projects may include website updates, quality assurance, and search-engine optimization.
