The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 and representing over 98,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia and uniformed services, is seeking a Social Media Editor for the AVMA Journals to join our Publications team at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, this newly created position is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive social media strategy that promotes the works of authors who publish in the AVMA Journals; drives traffic to the Journal websites; increases citations and readership of journal articles; enhances the overall experience for readers, authors, and members; and boosts Journal value and the AVMA brand. This individual will manage the AVMA’s social media portfolio for the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) and the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR), including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and podcasts—all in close collaboration with internal partners. The Social Media Editor will write and post social media content as scientific and didactic articles, opinion pieces, and other Journal content are published online, online-only collections are established or expanded, and new opportunities are pursued to post graphical abstracts, infographics, images, and interviews. This individual must be able to write posts that succinctly convey the clinical importance of the scientific content to ensure it resonates with journal readers and authors globally as well as with AVMA membership, the veterinary profession, stakeholders, and the public.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about AVMA’s mission. Additional qualifications include:
DVM/VMD or equivalent is required; BS/BA Degree or other training in marketing, communications, technology, public relations, or related fields is preferred.
Minimum of two years’ experience in clinical veterinary practice, veterinary research, or both.
Demonstrated communications experience, including relevant experience in executing social media strategy, especially with medical or technical content.
Energetic and creative, and able to think of unique approaches to communication with a range of audiences.
Proven experience managing social media platforms, developing strategies, leading campaigns, and using social media best practices.
Solid understanding of digital content strategies.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including proper grammar and punctuation.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Strong team building and project management skills.
Must be proficient at using Adobe Photoshop, Spark, or other image-editing software.
Experience with video-editing software preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact with all levels within the organization as well as external contacts.
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple assignments while meeting deadlines.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Experience with Google Analytics or Altmetric preferred.
