The Writer/Editor is a communications professional with broad-based responsibilities for conceptualizing, writing, and editing content about the University of Saint Joseph that support efforts in the areas of recruitment, public relations, advancement, and advertising. The ideal candidate for this position has strong written communication skills, an eye for editing, and a passion for writing. Other communication mediums include creating needed copy as required by communications plans and projects and advertising, creating stories for the bi-annual magazine, drafting emails, and creating copy for various projects the Marketing and Communications team undertakes such as news stories, press releases, and web content. The ability to leverage the power of words in bold storytelling and to recognize the importance of brevity to achieve goals is important in this role. Key to this position is editorial oversight of Outlook magazine, the University's principal publication that is produced twice a year.
Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)
Manage OUTLOOK Magazine, under the direction of the Director of Marketing and Communications, which includes: In collaboration with the Office of Alumni Relations and Institutional Advancement, develop theme and create editorial brief for each issue including developing and assigning feature articles. Copyedit magazine content and assist with magazine production schedule and deadlines with the graphic designer.
Identify, research, and write news stories based on campus activities and events
Write and edit articles and copy, ensuring accuracy, and proper grammar
Contributing writer for miscellaneous USJ materials, including web, recruitment brochures, ad copy, speeches, content marketing, social media, emails, texts, weekly campus update, and Family Connections Newsletter, and Blue Jay Bulletins.
Proof reading, in keeping with the USJ editorial style
Proven project management experience including, but not limited to, the ability to oversee magazine production and adapt articles for various platforms
Self-motivated and dedicated worker, able to work independently and as part of a team
Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously under deadline
Working with staff, determine opportunities to engage various departments to help further the work of the Office of Marketing and Communications.
Working with media, position the USJ story to meet the strategic goals of the University.

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Advertising, PR, English or Mass Communications required
3-5 years professional experience in copywriting, editing, content writing, and production.
Excellent writer and copy editor skills with knowledge of AP Style and the ability to adapt to institutional style; Strong writing skills, including journalism, magazine writing, Web writing and social media; the ability to adapt content to different platforms and audiences
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Creativity and ability to tailor the style of writing to reflect the audience
Relentless eye for detail, with excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills
Great interpersonal skills to work effectively with contributors, designers and university faculty/administration
Strong organizational skills to produce content within tight deadlines
Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows or Mac environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed. Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus.
Experience writing for a college or university a plus
Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the University professionally to the public

Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The anticipated hiring range for this position is $45,000-$50,000 (prorated for part-time candidates). The final offer will be based on the successful candidate's qualification and experience. This position is being offered as a part-time (30 hours/week) or full-time (37.5 hrs/week) position. The regular hours of this position are 8:00am-4:00pm (adjusted for part-time work). and is an on-campus position. Hours may vary due to the needs of the University or department.
