Associate/Full Professor, Broadcast & Digital Journalism
Location: Syracuse, New York
Type: Full Time
One of the nation’s leading Broadcast & Digital Journalism Programs is looking for an experienced educator and researcher. If that’s you, we’d like to talk!
Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications seeks a professor to teach students in one of the preeminent Broadcast and Digital Journalism programs in the country. We invite applications for a full-time tenured position, beginning August 22, 2022. This is an open-rank search.
This position will support the Newhouse School’s goal of producing highly-skilled and ethical journalists who can work across multiple platforms in different roles for both traditional and innovative news organizations. Teaching students how to report on diverse communities is also a priority of the Newhouse School.
Candidates will indicate aptitude for teaching through prior university teaching experience. They will also demonstrate their ability to bring national visibility to the school through academic scholarship and/or creative activity. Specifically, top candidates for a tenured position will have already established a well-defined and ambitious research/creative agenda. Financial support is available including membership in professional organizations, travel funding, technological support, and graduate-level research assistants.
Primary teaching responsibilities include courses required of all Broadcast & Digital Journalism majors: cross-media news writing, audio reporting and newscast production, digital and social media content production, video reporting and newscast production. Additional courses may include data journalism and visualization as well as research method courses.
In addition to an academic year teaching load and pursuing a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the school, this faculty member will also engage in a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate and graduate students, school and university committee service, departmental curriculum development and assessment, and community/industry partnerships.
The Broadcast and Digital Journalism Department (BDJ) at the Newhouse School is regarded as one of the top training grounds for broadcast and digital journalists. Newhouse BDJ alumni are employed at all levels of journalism organizations around the world. BDJ alumni help provide students with an employment pipeline that is second to none.
The department has a close working relationship with a number of news organizations. BDJ is a partner with the RTDNA/Newhouse School at Syracuse University Newsroom Survey, the most comprehensive annual survey of broadcast newsrooms.
BDJ also partners with the New York State Journalists Association to sponsor a biennial “State of the Field” full day workshop for media professionals and students. Newhouse BDJ students have done very well in national competitions over the years, most recently picking up a 2021 Murrow Award. Review of applications will start at the priority deadline of November 15, 2021. The position is open until filled. Applications from women and minority candidates are especially encouraged. Syracuse University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
