Portland Community College (PCC) is seeking a full-time Journalism instructor to be based at the Cascade Campus. This will be our first full-time instructor of Journalism. As a discipline, Journalism currently offers four courses and is embedded in the Communication Department. While their focus will be Journalism, we anticipate this instructor will teach a blend of Journalism and Communication courses. Full time instructors normally teach four courses per term. Journalism is administratively aligned to the Arts, Humanities, Communication, and Design (AHCD) Pathway. The AHCD Pathway is committed to providing innovative learning opportunities to students, preparing them for the dynamic world of work. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds and abilities to study and develop their skills in preparation for a variety of careers and/or transfer to four-year institutions. This position requires knowledge of foundational areas of Journalism, our current focus is on media and information literacy, aimed at helping students develop skills needed to be media practitioners. Moving forward we seek ways to incorporate emerging subjects related to conceiving, creating, delivering and promoting rich multimedia content for journalistic storytelling across platforms and media outlets. PCC is committed to faculty developing professionally and contributing to the continuous improvement of the Journalism program and college processes. This includes staying abreast of innovations within the field of Journalism and applying this expertise to the improvement of existing courses, creating new courses, and expansion of the program while ensuring it aligns with college curricular standards and practices.

- Applies instructional expertise and a deep understanding of Culturally Responsive Education theory and practice to improve the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction
- Responds to cultural shifts and changing community support needs through ongoing interrogation of pedagogy and teaching practices
- Ability to blend an understanding of journalism in the digital age with the theory needed to teach foundational courses
- Ability to work effectively in the development, facilitation, and assessment of a relevant and progressive learner-centered curriculum for delivery face-to-face and in multiple modalities (e.g. hybrid, flex, online, remote)
- Demonstrates effective and appropriate skill in communications and human relations in the advising and mentoring of students, inclusive of populations having diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds, as well as individuals with disabilities
- Ability to incorporate digital journalism tools and storytelling strategies into the development of relevant and progressive curriculum
- Ability to teach a combination of at least four Communication courses, preferably: COMM 100, COMM 111, COMM 204, COMM 228
- Demonstrates commitment to developing professionally and contributing to the continuous improvement of the Journalism program and service to the college
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).
- Masters degree in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Speech Communication, Mass Communication, or Communications … Masters degree in a related area (e.g., History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology)
- Plus 30 graduate quarter hours in the subject area
Instructors without one of the degrees listed above could be hired on the basis of professional competence, which requires
- A Bachelor's degree in English, Creative Writing, Communications or Journalism
- Plus 2 or more years professional experience working in mass media
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience working as a journalist or as a professional in the mass media industry.
