Northeastern University is looking for an experienced journalist to be the Managing Editor of its award-winning news organization, News@Northeastern. The Managing Editor is a creative, curious, and innovative individual who is a superb editor with experience managing a team of reporters and the day-to-day tasks of a daily news operation. The Managing Editor supervises a team of in-house news reporters and freelancers who are expected to provide timely, accurate, and excellent coverage of every aspect of university life, as well as timely reporting on world news with angles and perspectives relevant to Northeastern.
Reporting to the Executive Editor, and working closely with the Vice President for Communications, the Managing Editor is a highly organized, deadline-driven professional with years of experience in a daily news organization. The Managing Editor must be able to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously and keep a team of reporters focused on delivering high quality storytelling. The Managing Editor must have a deep understanding of the current world events and topics dominating the national and international news cycles. He/she/they must be able to identify interesting angles and find relevant ways to have News@Northeastern cover those stories.
The Managing Editor is a key player within the Office of Communications and works closely with the web design/development, multimedia, and social media teams to develop stories and delivery strategies that are informed by audience analytics and inspired by the latest trends in digital journalism.
The Managing Editor is a strong and effective manager of his/her/their team, and a great team player with colleagues across the department.
Experience in higher education is neither necessary, nor desired. Newsroom experience is a must.
The Managing Editor must have the ability to strategize about editorial direction at the highest levels, and also copyedit the smallest details. He/she/they must be able to develop a working knowledge of science, research, educational trends, and other issues related to higher education in general, and to Northeastern in particular. He/she/they must have mastery AP Style and related journalistic conventions. He/she/they are up to date on the latest trends in digital journalism as produced by the best newsrooms outside of higher education.
It is also critical that the Managing Editor has a solid grasp on all data associated with digital storytelling, and is able to use it effectively to set goals and inform the day-to-day operations.
The Managing Editor is based in the Office of Communications on Northeastern's Boston campus. The university is primarily in-person with reasonable flexibility. This position has a hybrid option.
Like all staff members in the Office of Communications, the Managing Editor is occasionally required to work after hours and on weekend assignments.
5-8 years of newsroom experience
Excellent writing and copy-editing skills
Excellent command of AP style
Excellent sense of what is news
Superb focus on detail and accuracy while maintaining speed

Solid grasp on data and how to use it to inform storytelling
Great understanding of SEO
Knowledgeable about current social media platforms and using them for storytelling
