The Bay Area News Group, which includes The Mercury News and East Bay Times, is seeking a senior local news editor to oversee our local coverage team. We need an experienced manager with sharp news sensibilities and a penchant for coaching developing journalistic talent. Your turf spans the Bay Area, from the intellectual and economic ferment of San Jose/Silicon Valley to the south to challenged-but-redeveloping Oakland to the north to the wide-ranging diversity of Contra Costa County to the east. It’s a dynamic area that nevertheless struggles with a yawning income divide and cripplingly high housing prices. Politically progressive, culturally diverse, economically powerful, the Bay Area is an engine of American exceptionalism, and journalism here is like no place else.
The senior local news editor will:
Lead a talented, 15-member local news team.
Articulate and execute a vision for news coverage that connects with the Bay Area audience.
Coach developing journalistic talent while simultaneously motivating veteran reporters and editors.
Edit effectively for online and print outlets.
Communicate with your supervisor and colleagues regularly.
Monitor your team’s metrics and adjust your audience engagement strategy as needed.
A qualified candidate has:
Knowledge of a variety of journalistic disciplines, from crime and courts to politics to local government to economic and cultural issues
Deep experience as an editor and team leader
Strong editing skills under deadline pressure
Ability to juggle multiple stories of varying complexity
Strong grammatical skills and a working knowledge of the Associated Press stylebook
Proficiency at using SEO skills and social media to boost story audience and impact
Excellent communication skills regardless of the platform (i.e. in-person, Slack, Zoom, email, texts, etc.)
Attention to detail and organization
Ability to work harmoniously with other departments (i.e. audience, photo, enterprise, investigative and print production teams)
Required Education Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Required Experience Six years experience as a working journalist, including three years managing and editing journalists as part of a news organization
