E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Assistant Professor of Instruction, Broadcast Journalism
Location: Athens, Ohio
Internal Number: 41287
The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is seeking an assistant professor of instruction in broadcast journalism. The successful candidate will have extensive professional experience that enables him or her to teach undergraduate and graduate courses reflecting the modern demands of a news industry that has an increasingly digital, mobile, and streaming focus.
This candidate will help lead one of the top broadcast journalism programs in the country, which boasts alumni at some of the top news, sports and online channels in the world. These include ESPN, NBC, CBS, Insider, and Vice News. The candidate will teach core broadcast classes, such as Radio and Television Reporting and Writing, Fundamentals of Online Journalism, and Advanced Multimedia Practicum.
He or she will also be a vital component in producing and supervising students as part of our Athens Newswatch cluster of course. Students take four journalism broadcast classes so they devote four hours, four days a week to writing, reporting, directing and anchoring a live newscast that will be streamed to the school's Twitch, YouTube and Facebook channels.
This position is not tenure track and candidates will not be expected to produce scholarly research and/or professional creative activity. However, the candidate will have flexibility in his/her schedule of three classes a semester to attend conferences, collaborate with and cultivate industry connections, or innovate in broadcast education.
The school offers state-of-the-art teaching facilities, including broadcast and streaming studio spaces and dedicated podcasting studios. Competitive salaries and benefits, and a collegial, teamwork-oriented work environment are also key to the position. The school also fosters international collaborations and travel experiences.
Our undergraduate students are academically oriented, many of them coming from honors programs in high school. They are highly involved in nearly a dozen student publications including broadcast sports and news shows on WOUB Public Media, the school's PBS and NPR affiliate station.
Our graduate program, which includes master's and Ph.D. students, provides additional teaching, mentoring, and research opportunities.
A degree in journalism, communications or a related field, along with significant professional experience (at least two years) in broadcast journalism is required. A master's degree and at least five years of industry experience is preferred but not required.
We seek a candidate with a commitment in working effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
