Manages the operation of the academic journal office of one or more journals. Oversees the peer review process and the day-to-day functions of the journal office, taking on routine tasks as needed. Tracks progress of manuscripts from submission through peer review to final decision and manages peer review pipeline.
Ensures that all manuscripts are delivered on time, within page budget, and meets the standards of the University of Chicago Press. Works with production, editorial, electronic publishing, and peer-review support to troubleshoot and solve problems. Manages and tracks page charges, publication agreements, permissions requests, and performs other administrative management functions.
Liaise between the Press, Editors, editorial board members, authors, and reviewers. Maintains and nurtures relationships with the scholarly societies associated with the journals. Responsibilities include daily and heavy correspondence with all stakeholders. Must be a problem solver, deadline-oriented, diplomatic, and comfortable working and communicating with representatives from administrative to executive levels.
Prepares monthly and annual reports of journal-wide statistics as needed.
Represents the journal and the Press at academic meetings as needed.
Edits books, journals, or other written materials with some guidance from others. Establishes editing schedules.
Coordinate all stages of manuscript editing and proof review up to the time the book is bound and edit and approve catalog and jacket materials with guidance from others.
Performs other related work as needed.
At least 5 years experience in scholarly journal publishing.
Experience working with a scholarly society.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite required. Knowledge of Adobe products, basic HTML, LaTeX, and Editorial Manager strongly preferred.
Knowledge of various social media platforms.
Communicate clearly in writing.
Deal with others with tact.
Respond quickly and appropriately to emails and queries.
Coordinate with others and work in a team.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative.
Proficient ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
Manage stressful situations with ease.
Manage complex projects with a high level of organization, excellent time management, and attention to detail.
Some domestic or international travel.
