Close Date: OverviewLicensed to the Board of Trustees of San Diego State University, KPBS serves a countywide audience with news, information, cultural, entertainment, arts, and educational programming across multiple media platforms. The station exists to inform, enlighten, and entertain San Diego by presenting locally and nationally produced programming that is valued and worth supporting.
Reporting to the Associate General Manager, Content and managing a staff of 42, including News Managers, Reporters, Producers, Editors, Anchors and Hosts, the News Director will lead all news activities for this unique, multiplatform public media station.
The News Director will thus develop a vision and strategy for the news department, which will capitalize on emerging technologies and fulfill the station's mission to serve the diverse communities and voices in San Diego. This professional will set the agenda and tone of the newsroom and be responsible for prioritization and organization of news content on all
platforms, with a focus on creating an optimal, inclusive newsroom culture and creating the highest quality, integrity and value of news information.
The Director will manage staffing, budgets and the success of department initiatives/news productions. This person will also play a public role maintaining relations with the community and audience members, news stakeholders, major donors and KPBS news and other station partners. As leader of the news team, the Director will also strategize around best opportunities to expand and improve news service, and thus will work with Development, Grants, Outreach,
Events and Communications to optimize fundraising for station and present to donors.
Thus the ideal candidate will be a dynamic, empathetic and inspiring leader who is a seasoned, experienced journalist with prior experience in the field. This individual will have substantial management experience and will be not only a proactive and superior communicator (with staff and others) but an excellent listener. This individual will be present, engaged and approachable. The ability to empower staff and lead and work collaboratively is key, as is someone who is selfaware, transparent and accountable. This person will also be technologically facile and will embrace emerging products and platforms. Prior union exposure would be ideal and passion for public media, and its mission, is essential.
ResponsibilitiesThe KPBS New Director is responsible for but not limited to the following: - Be present and engaged to balance daily and long-term priorities regarding newsroom organization and story selection, all with an eye towards fulfilling the stations mission. Proactively and regularly communicate the news departments functioning and direction to staff and the station overall.
- Develop, create and implement the long- and mid-range strategy for newsroom staffing, budgets and quality of news coverage, as well as the success of new department initiatives.
- Manage, support and empower news managers, reporters, producers, editors, anchors and hosts and lead quality news coverage for locally produced stories across all media platforms: KPBS.org, Midday Edition, Evening Edition, TV News Briefs, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Roundtable, NPR One and social media.
- Recruit, hire and lead an inclusive and diverse news team, aligned with news departments mission.
- Reorganize the team as necessary to adjust to a changing media landscape and create a sustainable and thriving culture. Run regular staff meetings, balancing staff requests and workflow needs.
- Ensure teams receive regular feedback to maintain and improve storytelling quality, as well as adapt to shifting media platforms. Plan and budget for newsroom-wide training, as well as individual training requests based on the newsroom strategic plan and funding.
- Set and ensure high journalistic standards, and on a case-by-case basis guide editors and reporters in ethics based on the context of a particular situation. Ensure that KPBS news content is thoroughly researched, edited, balanced, accurate and engaging to meet the needs of the distinct media.
- Oversee the updating and implementation of the stations Breaking News (Crisis) Plan.
- Be responsible for relationships with external newsroom partners. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and connect periodically with other public media news outlets to collaborate on special coverage and trade best practices regarding workflow and newsroom strategy.
- Strategize around best opportunities to expand and improve news service. Work with Development,
- Grants, Outreach, Events and Communications to optimize fundraising for station. Present to donors. Participate in on-air fundraising for the station, as appropriate.
- Respond to audience questions and concerns regarding KPBS news coverage. Work with legal counsel, Associate General Manager for Content & Communications, and the General Manager to respond to legal threats made against KPBS regarding news coverage.
- Represent news in regular meetings and with other members of KPBS senior staff, including members of the Management Council, VPS, Executive Directors Group, the TV/FM program director and senior online staff.
- Lead news management retreats to ensure common understanding and implementation of news mission, coverage priorities, and efficient workflows.

- Provide high-level leadership to the team, including ensuring the training and development of
staff and planning for succession across key roles.

who serve on study committees.
QualificationsMinimum Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities - Substantial supervisory experience managing editorial and creative staff and demonstrated
success as an inclusive, empathetic, creative, effective and forward-thinking manager/team
leader is required.
- Commitment to enterprise and investigative reporting.
- Experience managing large complex budgets is essential, as is the ability to oversee multiple
projects simultaneously and insure they are completed on time and on budget.
- Demonstrated success as a team player who works well with supervisors, peers and
subordinates.
- Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills required. Excellent
command of the English language, grammar and style. Ability to generate creative article ideas
and fresh approaches to familiar subjects. Excellent editorial skills required.
- Ability to connect with and maintain relationships with community leaders and newsmakers.
- Strong computer skills including standard office software programs, familiarity with content
management systems, prefer experience with TV and/or radio broadcast reporting/editing
equipment and software. Strong knowledge of editorial and production standards.
Minimum Education & Experience- Bachelor's degree in relevant field or additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
- Six-years of related experience in a management or supervisory capacity
Preferred Qualifications- Prior union exposure is ideal.
- Proven experience creating, editing and managing content in a multiplatform setting, including
some combination of print, broadcast and online.
- Prior experience in a public media and/or nonprofit news setting. Additional commercial
experience welcome. Demonstrated cultural competency in telling stories that serve a diverse
community, including those from historically marginalized and/or underrepresented groups
