1. Selects and supervises corps of freelance editors, proofreaders, and indexers. Hires, trains, and supervises freelancers. 2. Evaluates draft manuscripts and writes "condition check" reports to help authors prepare a final manuscript that meets the Press's requirements for formatting, organization, and style. Provides follow-up consultation. 3. For projects released for editing, assesses degree of editing required (from baseline editing, for clarity and consistency, to rewriting), bearing in mind schedule, intended scope and size of audience, and budget for each book, and selects appropriate freelance editors and schedules their work. 4. Works with author or authors--using best practices, care, and tact--throughout all stages of production. Acts as a liaison between authors and various Press departments. 5. Works with freelance editors, overseeing editing and preparing manuscript for composition. Assigned projects may be books intended for a wide audience that require heavy editing; complex, heavily illustrated books; reference works; books on rush schedules (such as exhibition catalogues); multi-author volumes, or books with other known complications or challenges.  6. Coordinates page proofs and acts as quality control through all stages of production (sample pages; page proof; revised pages; pdfs or blues) to bound books. Edits and proofreads index. Resolves complex problems resulting from poor composition, author or co-publisher revisions in proof, etc. 7. Edits and proofreads copy for jacket, catalogue, and ancillary materials. 8. Trains new members of staff. Hires, trains, and supervises interns or assists in doing so. 9. Edits projects as needed. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Education:  

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and seven years' editorial experience in an illustrated-book publishing environment (most or all in a manuscript editing department) or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
