Position Summary
Columbia Climate School seeks an enterprising Assistant Editor (320 hours/year) to assist in researching, reporting, and writing stories around school priorities for its news site, State of the Planet.
The Assistant Editor will assist in planning and producing a wide range of content. The schedule will be flexible, with an estimated 5 hours per week for most weeks, increasing to 10 or 15 during busier times of year.
Responsibilities
- Editing news stories and blog posts by freelance writers, scholars, and student contributors, with the aim of reaching a general audience
- Writing and producing pieces around institutional priorities, including academic initiatives, awards and milestones, breaking news, and events such as Earth Day and Climate Week
- Researching and conducting interviews, when necessary
- Finding artwork for stories
- Collaborating with others to generate story ideas and creative angles for coverage, and to strategically plan content
- Assist with administrative tasks, as needed
- Drafting and scheduling social media posts to promote content
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor???s degree in journalism or related field. Proficiency in English. Attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and multitask
- Two or more years of experience writing and editing
- Demonstrated ability to understand and maintain editorial standards
- Basic knowledge of science and ability to translate scientific concepts to the layperson
