Columbia Climate School seeks an enterprising Assistant Editor (320 hours/year) to assist in researching, reporting, and writing stories around school priorities for its news site, State of the Planet.
The Assistant Editor will assist in planning and producing a wide range of content. The schedule will be flexible, with an estimated 5 hours per week for most weeks, increasing to 10 or 15 during busier times of year.
Editing news stories and blog posts by freelance writers, scholars, and student contributors, with the aim of reaching a general audience
Writing and producing pieces around institutional priorities, including academic initiatives, awards and milestones, breaking news, and events such as Earth Day and Climate Week
Researching and conducting interviews, when necessary
Finding artwork for stories
Collaborating with others to generate story ideas and creative angles for coverage, and to strategically plan content
Assist with administrative tasks, as needed
Drafting and scheduling social media posts to promote content
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor???s degree in journalism or related field. Proficiency in English. Attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and multitask
Two or more years of experience writing and editing
Demonstrated ability to understand and maintain editorial standards
Basic knowledge of science and ability to translate scientific concepts to the layperson
