Black Joy Social Reporter

This is a remote-based position.

In the past few years, younger Americans have brought renewed energy and focus to the reckonings with justice, equity and power. Reckon has been there, covering those movements, issues and perspectives and shining a light on the people in the South and elsewhere.

We’re looking for a Black Joy by Reckon social reporter. This reporter will follow key leaders, influencers, organizations, companies and brands; track emerging trends to produce stories for our website and newsletters, and create content that is native to our social platforms, including Instagram and Twitter.

This reporter will showcase stories that showcase African Americans who are finding and sharing joy with intention, which is often not seen in traditional media, where the Black experience is typically shown one-dimensionally as trauma and grief.

Black Joy isn’t fluff. Rather, Black Joy is about shining a light on how people resist trauma, reclaim their stories, define Blackness on their own terms and get free.

Created by Starr Dunigan, Black Joy by Reckon started as a weekly newsletter highlighting the liberative power of African Americans and Black folks throughout the diaspora practicing joy with intention. We are now expanding Black Joy to include more storytelling and additional products.

Black Joy are stories of young organizers taking back political power, brand mavens building fashion empires from home-based businesses, Black queer folks demanding to be seen and music that makes us feel better after a week of microaggressions and healing from community trauma.

Responsibilities

• Constantly monitor social conversations and trends related to Black Joy.
• Identify opportunities to produce quick stories of interest to the Black Joy audience on various platforms.
• Find creative ways to amplify voices that align with Black Joy’s mission, including through user-generated content.
• Curate and aggregate stories for Black Joy’s newsletters.
