Stanford Medicine is seeking an Associate Editor to plan and edit content for our award-winning News Center. Reporting to the Director, Editorial Strategy, the Associate Editor assigns, edits and publishes content for audiences across platforms, identifying innovative approaches to storytelling and effective audience engagement strategies. This position collaborates closely with internal and external writers, faculty partners and other staff at Stanford Medicine to produce content that is relevant and targeted by channel and audience.
Candidates for this position should have a strong history of success as an editor in a media setting (news organizations, magazines, public information offices, etc.) Previous editorial work in science, medicine or health settings is a plus. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits.
Guide strategic planning of the news content in collaboration with the Content Strategy team's editors, including evaluating, prioritizing and editing the content.
Perform developmental editing, copy editing and proofreading of News Center content.
Assess content pitches and requests in partnership with the editing team driving the intake review process.
Collaborate with Stanford Medicine teams including the Office of Communications, Strategy, Marketing, science and clinical departments to identify and develop stories that align with strategic priorities.
Brainstorm ideas for short-term and long-term editorial planning. Update editorial calendars and planning documents.
Provide editing assistance for other materials produced by the Office of Communications, such as articles for Scope or Stanford Medicine magazine.
Providing faculty members with counsel on news stories and press releases
Track and measure the impact of the content and related promotional strategies.
Write about Stanford Medicine programs, people, research, and events.

Candidate should also have proven success in:
Developmental editing, copy editing, proofreading and writing for publication in print, web and other platforms, including news releases, newsletters, feature stories and blog items.
Project-management and organization to ensure that deadlines and budgets are met.
Interpersonal and oral communication, and ability to interact effectively with a diverse array of people, including senior leaders.
Use of Microsoft Office Suite, InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe AEM, Wordpress and related software.
Understanding Web technologies and applications, including social networking, social media tools, and current communication trends.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant work experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Demonstrated understanding of the principles, terminology, procedures, and best practices of communications, public relations, and editorial content.
Extensive experience in planning and implementing complex publications/editorial projects.
Demonstrated ability to synthesize and coordinate materials from multiple resources.
Demonstrated ability to edit complex stories for both style and substance.
Exceptional attention to detail and thorough command of editorial and proofreading skills.
Experience producing highly effective work within the deadline and cost constraints of clients.
Extensive experience and understanding of job-required software applications.
Demonstrated ability to apply ingenuity and creativity in solving complex problems.
Demonstrated ability to apply discretion and judgment in evaluating implications of information release to internal and external audiences.
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, and grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
Rarely sort/file paperwork; lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
