Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism (www.journalism.columbia.edu) is seeking an endowed, named professor whose primary field of study, teaching and research is local journalism (open track, open rank). The person who becomes the Philip S. Balboni Professor of Local Journalism will offer a vision for rebuilding the public square in communities large and small, while nurturing the development of journalists who dig deeply into local issues, who connect with residents and who use innovation to build news organizations that can thrive.
The preference is for a candidate who will join the tenure track. That means someone who has the ability to produce a body of substantial work that will make a significant contribution to the field. The work could involve insights about creating an information landscape, engaging communities that have been marginalized, and strengthening coverage of core issues important to local citizens in communities in the United States or abroad.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments that give them the ability to teach graduate students. As a full-time member of our faculty, the Professor of Local Journalism will teach core classes in Writing and Reporting methods as well as seminars in areas of the candidate's expertise. Those core courses involve reporting throughout the city, meaning a candidate's comfort with courts, education, municipal government and similar lines of reporting is a plus. Advising master's projects and/or theses is another key element of the job. The professor will also work with faculty and staff to continue to diversify and improve the School's curriculum, read applications and serve on faculty committees as assigned.
We seek candidates who will work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students. We are especially interested in those who, through their research, teaching, and service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
This position will begin no earlier than July 1, 2023, pending budgetary and administrative approval. Screening of applications will begin in or about January 2023, and the search will remain open until the position is filled.
We request that you submit a curricula vitae and a personal statement for consideration. We also welcome examples of your best work and/or other related documentation to support your candidacy.
