Description:
Reporting to the AVP of Marketing and Communications, the Managing Editor oversees the print and digital editorial calendar and content creation for the Hofstra University Magazine, with a vision for communicating the University's mission and strategic priorities. This position is a key role in the strategic communications team in the Division of Marketing and Communications. The Managing Editor leads the magazine efforts from concept to publication and works collaboratively with communicators University-wide, freelancers, and vendors to ensure magazine issues are published on time and within budget. As the Magazine Editor, this individual will use their broad understanding of the higher education landscape and Hofstra, as well as their inherent curiosity, to develop magazine issue themes that successfully support the University's strategic priorities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Lead the content strategy and content development of Hofstra Magazine.
Choose freelancers and implement freelance contracts as needed.
Forge and sustain relationships with colleagues and alumni to gather story ideas and implement them strategically.
Generate original ideas for features, photography, and layouts and effectively communicate those to the magazine editorial team.
Lead all design elements of the print and digital magazine.
Willing to research, report, and write across disciplines with a keen understanding of inclusive communications.
Manage the production of each magazine issue and plan out future issues.
Ability to help writers and creatives, synthesize potentially complex research material to produce engaging stories.
Create and adhere to deadlines.
Oversee management of the magazine's website.
Ensure that stories communicate Hofstra's mission, support strategic objectives, and meet the highest editorial standards.
Implement routine reader surveys to guide story selection and ensure reader satisfaction.
Work with the editorial team to ensure sustainable and consistent file organization.
Monitor and respond to feedback from readers or other university stakeholders.
Manage the magazine budget and act as a good steward of funds.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in journalism or relevant field required.
Four to six years of prior related experience.
Demonstrable editing and writing skills with a strong professional portfolio.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the higher education environment preferred.
Ability to manage a magazine/editorial calendar.
Keen eye for spotting a good story.
Experience working with designers to build and maintain a website.
