The Department of Communication Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Education at University of Detroit Mercy seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in digital journalism at the rank of assistant professor. The position will begin August 15, 2023.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The chosen candidate will have college-level teaching experience and expertise in one or more of the following: journalism, digital media, web development, graphic design, computer animation, news production, emerging media, or interactive or immersive media. Advanced knowledge in relevant software applications (such as Adobe Creative Cloud) is desirable. The candidate will have a Ph.D. or a terminal degree in journalism or a related communication field, with relevant professional experience and a demonstrated ability to work with students and colleagues.
The chosen candidate will teach undergraduate courses in digital journalism, with the opportunity to develop course offerings. The ideal candidate will teach news writing and reporting, multimedia journalism, media ethics, as well as media literacy, and will have experience producing journalism across various digital platforms. The candidate will serve as the faculty advisor for the award-winning student newspaper, The Varsity News. Other responsibilities will include academic advising and mentoring of communication majors, scholarship in field of expertise, an active role in curriculum development and assessment, and managing classroom equipment and resources. We seek a person enthusiastic about working in Detroit, contributing to the city's continued rebirth, and fostering the creative growth of undergraduate students at a liberal arts university located in a vibrant urban context and committed to building community through diverse partnerships.
