The USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism, founded in 2004, is seeking to hire a veteran health journalist to help us launch and lead a new non-profit journalism collaborative focused on health and health equity. This is a creative and enterprising role with the opportunity to help build a new initiative from the ground up, in collaboration with participating news partners. The Collaborative Editor will create educational programming, serve as project editor and lead a learning and reporting effort that will involve 6-7 ethnic media outlets in California. As project manager, youâll nurture esprit de corps and build a virtual newsroom among the reporters and their editorial colleagues, brainstorming on story ideas, editing copy and developing a learning curriculum. The project builds on our prior successful collaborative projects, most recently our "Uncovered California" project chronicling circumstances, needs and policy options for Californiaâs uninsured during a pivotal year for state policy reforms.
This is a 40 hour per week, grant-funded, hybrid, staff position based in Los Angeles, with a two-days-a-week in-office requirement. Â
Successful candidates should have at least 3-5 years or more of daily newsroom experience and demonstrated expertise in reporting and/or editing on health and health policy topics. Editing and project management experience are pluses, as are bilingual skills. Diverse candidates, journalists with experience in the ethnic media sector and candidates familiar with the California health policy landscape are especially encouraged. We seek applicants who are creative, enterprising journalists with strong project management and editing skills, a collaborative spirit, health journalism expertise and the ability to manage both long term goals and respond to breaking news opportunities. Â
