Job Overview
The Communications Staff Writer/Editor writes and edits a broad range of communications aimed at connecting and reconnecting alumni and donors with Georgetown University. Under the direction of the editorial team's senior director, they will produce sharp, web-friendly news and feature copy for magazines, reports, and websites (giving.georgetown.edu, alumni.georgetown.edu, feed.georgetown.edu) overseen by the Office of Advancement's communications team.
As well, they also cover alumni and donor events, curate content for newsletters, and assist with web content management; and proofread a wide range of communications to ensure compliance with the Office of Advancement Style Guide.
The communication materials produced by Advancement Communications must be accurate, must correctly represent Georgetown's priorities and align with its brand, and must be delivered on time. The Communications Staff Writer/Editor helps ensure that materials are of the highest quality and adhere to editorial standards and style - and may be the last person to see an e-mail before it is distributed or an invitation before it is printed, so attention to detail and quality is critical.
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Senior Director, Editorial, the Communications Staff Writer/Editor is part of a multi-disciplinary Communications team that includes editorial, creative, digital, and multimedia professionals. They have contact with alumni, students, faculty, staff, and donors.
They write copy that is reviewed by other members of the team and edits copy written by others; and beyond other members of the Communications team, they work with teams throughout Advancement on critical events, reports, and public-facing materials.
They are proactive in reaching out to colleagues throughout Advancement and the university to pursue story ideas or to share content; and take an inclusive lens and approach to interviewing alumni, faculty, staff, students, and donors of all backgrounds and life experiences, while incorporating such perspectives into content.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
1 to 3 years of experience in writing, editing, or marketing communications
Demonstrated ability to write sharp copy on a tight deadline with minimal edits
Strong writing, copyediting, and communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills such as teamwork
Ability to identify and tell compelling stories about a diverse array of people and topics
Proactivity in utilizing language and creating content that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to effectively managing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
Experience with content management systems, HTML, and analytics tools also a plus
Preferred Requirement and Qualification
News writing and/or experience in higher education
