The Yarshater Center for the Study of Iranian Literary Traditions, UCLA, seeks applications for an Academic Administrator to serve as the Senior Editor. The position is full time and would begin November 1, 2023.
The Senior Editor is responsible for the editorial excellence of the research and publication agenda of the Yarshater Center, and supervises all aspects of the editorial process, including: critically evaluating manuscript submissions and directing them to editorial board members or readers for peer-review; editing, proof-reading, fact-checking and preparing manuscripts for publication; overseeing agreements and contracts; and managing in conjunction with the Yarshater Center Publications Manager the publication workflow from manuscript submission to the delivery of digital files to the publisher. These tasks the Senior Editor will be performing in consultation with the Center Director.
As an integral member of the Yarshater Center, the Senior Editor works closely with the Center Director and Publications Manager to develop and implement the publishing agenda, assist in exploring publication projects and digital initiatives, as well as provide editorial assistance. The Senior Editor and the Center Publications Manager are mainly responsible for the scientific accuracy and excellence of the Center's publication endeavors, including the Encyclopaedia of the Ancient Iranian World, and the Iranian Library. Moreover, the Yarshater Center Senior Editor will collaborate with (1) the Pourdavoud Center Publications Manager; (2) the Pourdavoud Center Assistant Director on publications related to the Center's strategic plans, newsletters, and development material; and (3) the Pourdavoud Center Program and Administration Coordinator to promote the Center's publications through the web, podcasting, social media, and other digital technologies.
The Senior Editor will report to the Pourdavoud Center Director who is assisted by the Chief Administrative Officer of the North Kaplan Administrative Group. The Senior Editor is expected to work on-campus and keep regular office hours.
Duties include:
Collaborate with the Center Director and Publications Manager to develop and implement editorial guidelines and standards for the Center's publication agenda, including the Encycloapedia of the Ancient Iranian World, and The Iranian Library.
Work closely with the Center Publications Manager to ensure project milestones and deadlines are met.
Participate in editorial meetings and contribute to discussion on the Center's overall progress and content coverage.
Critically evaluate submitted manuscripts for value, logic, and accuracy.
Edit, proofread, and fact-check manuscripts accepted for publication for stylistic consistency, spelling, grammar, punctuation, logic, and to conform to the Center's/publisher's specifications.
Rewrite text that is ambiguous, imprecise, or rambling. Verify factual content and references to the extent possible.
Communicate with authors, publishers, distributors, and other production personnel as needed throughout the publication process.
Compose letters of acceptance or rejection for contributors with summary of criticism and commentary. Suggest revisions or changes to the author.
Receive, acknowledge, and maintain records of manuscripts submitted for publication.
In consultation with the academic editor of the journal/series, identify suitable manuscripts and coordinate peer review process.
Prepare illustrations for publication. When necessary, obtain high resolution digital images and permissions from authors, publishers, libraries, and museums.
Coordinate print and online publishing with Center's academic publishers.
Attend Center conferences and events to promote publications, screen presentations for publication potential, and meet conference organizers and guest speakers.
Coordinate and work with the Pourdavoud Center's Programs and Administration Coordinator to publicize publications through the web, podcasting, social media, professional organizations, and other venues.
Prepare written reports on publications for the Faculty Advisory Committee, annual Center reviews, and as requested.
Qualifications:
Detailed knowledge of, or work with, one or more areas of research relevant to ancient Iranian Studies and/or the study of the ancient worlds (e.g., Ancient Near East; Classics). PhD in ancient Iranian studies or a related field is required.
At least 5-7 years of experience in academic editing and publishing, preferably with expertise in old Iranian philology /ancient Iranian history and culture.
Strong research skills and familiarity with the specialized literature and scholarship in the field of ancient Iranian studies.
Strong language skills in research/specialized languages. Ability to evaluate manuscripts written in at least two other languages other than English (French, German, and Persian preferred).
Detailed knowledge of standard copyediting procedures to prepare manuscripts for publication.
Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to discern errors and inconsistencies in printed and digital content.
Ability to use word processing and publication software (e.g., MSWord, InDesign, Adobe Acrobat, WordPress, etc.) with a high degree of competence.
Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, students, authors, co-workers and staff.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks.
Highly motivated and able to set priorities, meet deadlines, and problem solve independently.
Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
