The AE’s primary responsibility is to assist and support the Editor in Chief and other editors in ensuring that JAALAS continues to disseminate groundbreaking research within the laboratory animal science community. Of note, as of December 2024, the journal Comparative Medicine (CM) ceased publication, and all content within the scope of CM now appears in a special section of JAALAS. The AE is a Remote job position.
Key tasks/skills:
Become proficient in using the online editor tools on the Scholar One platform to receive and manage submitted manuscripts. Candidate must have demonstrated ability to learn new software and work within a digital environment.
Review scientific manuscripts for proper grammar and scientific content. The candidate must demonstrate an ability to edit scientific publications. Extensive experience authoring technical and scientific manuscripts is expected.
Compose diplomatic yet accurate correspondence to authors regarding the reviews of their manuscripts. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to use appropriate language when addressing potentially contentious issues related to individual manuscripts.
Utilize Excel spreadsheets to participate in planning journal issues. Candidate should demonstrate familiarity with spreadsheet use and revision.
Assign appropriate reviewers to incoming manuscripts to help ensure a thorough and fair peer review system and monitor the review process to prevent delays. Evidence of a candidate’s ability to network with colleagues and identify suitable reviewers is desirable.
Identify special interest topics for JAALAS and assist in the recruitment of authors.
Serve as an ambassador for the journals and participate in selecting Editorial Review Board (ERB) members to ensure a balanced and effective ERB.
Contribute to preparing and reviewing editorials as needed to address important topics that impact JAALAS readers or manuscript publication.
Become familiar with JAALAS manuscript style requirements to effectively evaluate manuscript proofs after acceptance.
Assist the EIC and other editorial staff members as needed in special projects or tasks.
Documented history of publication and experience in reviewing scientific manuscripts.
Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
Effective time management skills.
Commitment to publication excellence and timely and fair editorial decisions.
Membership in AALAS for a minimum of 5 years is required.
Demonstrated commitment to the AALAS mission.
