								<description>New York, New York,  Summary Description: Columbia University Libraries invites applications for an Editor to lead the management and development of the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals (https://library.columbia.edu/libraries/avery/avery-index.html) , which began in 1934 at Columbia&#39;s Avery Library and has been in continuous commercial publication since 1965. The Index is widely considered a seminal scholarly research resource for accredited programs in architectural design, archaeology, historic preservation, urban planning, and environmental studies. Annual revenues for FY22 are projected at over $850,000; income from the publication supports 3 contract indexers and either wholly or partially funds the salaries for 13 permanent librarian and staff lines at Avery Library. Continued investment in and revenues from the Index are essential in sustaining Avery Library&#39;s ability to support the evolving needs of many of the university&#39;s academic, teaching, and research programs. The Index Editor will direct the Index by researching and targeting new areas of scholarly production for inclusion; by overseeing all operational needs of the Index including training and supervising staff and contractor indexers; by indexing articles in multi-language journals; by tracking and assessing workflow efforts within the Indexing team; and, by contributing editorial and publishing expertise across  CUL  through both collaborative and independent projects. Candidates should be able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments worthy of appointment to a faculty position, including an ability to teach graduate students at a major research university. The School and professorship embrace diversity and seek candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students.  Candidates should have a strong background in journalism and must be up-to-date with best practices, digital workflow and modern tools used to create and distribute content on various platforms. A work history that shows a capacity to innovate and to be nimble in a fast-changing news environment is also important. S/he will serve as a member of the full-time faculty of Columbia&#39;s Journalism School and as the assistant director at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism will help shape a research program addressing the challenges and opportunities for journalism both now and in the future. We are looking for outstanding candidates who are journalism practitioners, academics, or researchers in one of the following disciplines: computational journalism, data journalism, digital security, disinformation research or reporting, media research or reporting, technology platform research or reporting, newsroom innovation, informatics research or communications studies. A successful candidate for this tenure-track position will have a track record of publishing work at the intersection of journalism and technology, and will preferably have direct experience working in a newsroom or with newsrooms. As a member of Columbia Journalism School faculty, the successful candidate will be required to teach a variety of courses, as well as advise the cohort of dual masters&#39; students in Computer Science and Journalism.  The faculty position is affiliated with the Tow Center for Digital Journalism. As Assistant Director the role requires engagement with the activities of the Tow Center which include developing curriculum materials, identifying research opportunities, conducting research and journalism on relevant subjects, arranging events and workshops and integrating the research work of the Tow Center into the curriculum. The Tow Center is known for its forward-thinking examination of trends and technologies that affect journalism, from the power of large technology platforms in reshaping the news, to the ethical operation of AI in the newsroom, and rapid response research in areas such as the security and resilience of journalists during the  COVID  pandemic. The successful candidate will work with the Director of the Tow Center and the research team to develop new programming and areas of research and help shape the Center&#39;s agenda for the coming decade. As a full-time member of our faculty, their teaching assignments will be determined each year upon mutual agreement with the deans.
