The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities seeks an outstanding faculty member, with a distinguished record of professional experience, to join our faculty in teaching the next generation of visual, multimedia journalists. The professorship will hold a non-tenure-line, renewable position in the Hubbard School. It is a two- to three-year term, depending on experience and consistent with HSJMC contract guidelines. The appointment will begin in August 2023.
The successful applicant will teach the next generation of visual journalists how to innovate in a fast-changing media environment. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise as leaders and pioneers in visual news gathering and multimedia reporting, and the ability to inspire a diverse student body.
As a full-time non-tenure track faculty member, the successful candidate will help students appreciate the vital role of visual journalism and multimedia storytelling in providing the public with critical information resources in a democracy. The School seeks someone to 1) teach basic to advanced journalism courses in the School’s recently renovated digital media labs, and 2) focus on building and strengthening partnerships between faculty and students with Twin Cities professional community and professional associations. Contract teaching professors are also expected to be actively engaged in regional, national or international professional communities, develop an understanding and participate in curriculum development and assessment relevant to their professional expertise, and participate in mentoring students for professional careers. Depending on the candidate’s skills, the candidate may also develop new curricula or special projects courses in the area of visual journalism, mobile multimedia storytelling, or multiplatform editing.
The 9-month non-tenure track faculty position is benefit-eligible, renewable and carries the title of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor depending on qualifications, including years of teaching and professional experience. The teaching load for contract teaching faculty positions is 3 courses per term during the academic year. Additional summer employment may be available. Appointment at the rank of Teaching Associate Professor (non-tenure track) may be considered for a candidate with advanced teaching and professional experience. The anticipated start date for the position is August 28, 2023.
Minimum required qualifications: A B.A. in Communication, Journalism, Mass Communication or closely related field with 5 or more years of professional experience; or a professional M.A. or PhD in Communication, Journalism, Mass Communication or related field with 2 or more years of professional experience, will be considered. Meaningful professional experience is required, and candidates are encouraged to document their teaching and professional experience and/or industry engagement relevant to the position in their application letter. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates will be passionate about training students to be visual journalists who can think critically, write clearly, report stories visually and ask tough questions in a fast-paced world. Preferred candidates will be deeply skilled in reporting, visual editing, multimedia storytelling, and/or data visualization, accustomed to training professionals in the areas of multimedia storytelling or reporting, and willing to embrace new methods and media. Preferred candidates will also demonstrate ethical judgment and skill to teach students how to make tough calls and work with diverse audiences. Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating: *Five years of major-market regional or national experience planning and producing visual journalism, or equivalent experience *Exceptional storytelling skills that integrate multimedia elements such as text, video, audio, photo, graphics and/or data *Experience writing and/or editing digital content and utilization of AP style *Familiarity with new and emerging tools and technologies for multimedia reporting *Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in both professional practices and as contributors to an inclusive working and learning environment.
