Acquires new titles in philosophy and political theory for Harvard University Press.
Position Description
Harvard University Press seeks an Acquisitions Editor to sign 10-15 new books each year in philosophy and political theory. Reporting to the Editorial Director, the new Editor will build a strong list of philosophy and political theory books of interest to both scholars and the general readership.
Responsibilities:
The Editor for Philosophy and Political Theory closely monitors innovative research by establishing contacts with scholars and other experts, reading widely and deeply in the literature, attending professional conferences, and traveling to campuses throughout the United States. He or she maintains a network of prospective authors, along with agents and other publishing professionals, commissions new works of broad appeal and significance; and selectively solicits and evaluates proposals for trade books and cutting-edge research monographs.
The Editor for Philosophy and Political Theory negotiates contracts on behalf of the Press, sends manuscripts for peer review; works closely with authors to ensure that manuscripts are well written and contractual obligations are met, writes title information sheets and design briefs, presents new books at the marketing launch meeting, and to the Press?s faculty board. The Editor uses industry-standard software to maintain records, update metadata, find competitive titles, and track sales trajectory and inventory levels of HUP books.
This is a two year term position.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:
Undergraduate degree is required, with an advanced degree in philosophy or political theory strongly preferred. 5 years of publishing experience is required, including 2 years of book-acquisition experience. Other relevant qualifications such as advanced academic degrees or institutional appointments will be considered.

This is a two-year term position. This position has a 3-month orientation and review period.
