Call for Books Editor-in-Chief Applications
The Entomological Society of America is seeking candidates to serve in the position of books editor-in-chief. The selected candidate will begin a four-year term in January 2024. Women, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and LGBTQ scientists, as well as scientists from intersecting groups and other underrepresented or minoritized groups, are encouraged to apply.
The primary responsibility of the books editor-in-chief (EIC) is to oversee the Thomas Say Publications. ESA began publishing the Thomas Say imprint more than 100 years ago. A peer-reviewed book series, it consists of Monographs (systematic works), Proceedings (collections of entomological papers delivered at symposia sponsored by ESA or other scientific societies), and Memoirs (books whose topics do not fit the Monographs or Proceedings). Recent Thomas Say Publications include An Important and Victorious Science: The International Congresses of Entomology and The Neotropical Polymorphic Earless Praying Mantises: A Taxonomic Review of the Genera and Checklist of Species. Publications of monographs in the Thomas Say series are supported by the Thomas Say Monograph Fund.
The selected candidate will ensure that Thomas Say Publications continues to publish only the highest quality works on systematics and other topics. The books EIC may also be involved with the preparation and peer review of other one-off titles, such as handbooks, certification-related titles, reprints of previously published books, and other products.
General Qualifications
The ideal candidate should be a respected and recognized scientist whose reputation brings prestige and visibility to the books program. They should have significant experience writing, editing, and reviewing scientific manuscripts, including books or book chapters. They should have expert knowledge in subjects such as arthropod biology, taxonomy, or systematics.
The editor should be able to devote the time and energy necessary to ensure that published books are of the highest quality and scientific interest and to ensure that they advance the quality and reputation of the ESA books program.
Responsibilities
- Work with ESA staff and the editorial board to develop and implement Thomas Say Publications’ overarching vision and strategy.
- Provide scientific leadership for Thomas Say Publications and other ESA books and related products, working to ensure that books published are of the highest quality and scientific interest, and that the peer review process proceeds smoothly.
- Evaluate and accept/reject book proposals, with input from the editorial board.
- Recruit peer reviewers for and make accept/reject decisions on manuscripts.
- Ensure that books involving description of new taxa or other nomenclatural acts are published in accordance with the International Code on Zoological Nomenclature.
- Attend and participate in meetings of the Thomas Say Editorial Board.
The EIC will receive an annual honorarium and will be eligible for reimbursement for expenses incurred during the course of their editor duties. Appointment is for a term of four years, with an option to renew for a second term.
The deadline for applications is October 25, 2023. Interested candidates should submit the following to pubs@entsoc.org: cover letter describing their qualifications for the position and vision and goals for the books program; curriculum vitae; and reprints of two published papers that best represent the candidate’s work. A search committee consisting of Thomas Say Editorial Board members and ESA Publications Council members will review all applications, conduct interviews, and submit a recommendation to the ESA Governing Board for approval.
