Editor (part-time), Free Speech Project - Georgetown University
Since 2017, the Free Speech Project at Georgetown University has served as an independent, nonpartisan initiative working to assess the condition of Free Speech in the United States today - in education, civil society, and government. Through its flagship enterprise, the Free Speech Tracker, the project has worked to examine Free Speech on a national scale, documenting incidents in which First Amendment values have been challenged or compromised. By assembling and analyzing instances in which expression was suppressed, the project hopes to understand broader national trends around Free Speech today.
The Editor - in a part-time role - provides professional editorial support for the Free Speech Project at Georgetown University, an ongoing assessment of the condition of Free Speech in America in education, civil society, and government at all levels.
They edit and proofread draft entries for the Free Speech Tracker, an online tool for monitoring Free Speech challenges and controversies across the United States, and other editorial vehicles of the Free Speech Project.
Reporting to and assisting the Director with managing editorial support, the Editor receives draft entries after copy edits and regular edits, and works collaboratively with colleagues to ensure consistent style and factual accuracy before publication.
Collaborating with the Editor, Copy Editor, and Student Researchers, the Editor produces quality and fact-based editorial material for Free Speech Tracker, Curriculum Modules, essays, and other online communications.
At least 5 years of journalistic and/or other editorial experience Ability to maintain and attend to a long editing list
Proactive in publishing work on time in a deadline-driven environment Strong journalistic integrity Comfortable with writing from a non-partisan perspective Comfortable with providing constructive feedback to students
Proficiency with Slack, AirTable, and other online communication tools
Work experience in higher education
