About the Job: The Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation is one of eleven divisions within the Department of Medicine, the largest department within the Medical School and University of Minnesota. This growing Division currently has 54 faculty, 36 administrative and research staff, and more than 20 fellows. The Division generates $17 million in patient care revenue and has a strong history of research, in partnership with the Masonic Cancer Center. The Divisionâ™s faculty members serve in leadership roles throughout the Medical School, Academic Health Sciences, Masonic Cancer Center, and affiliated health systems. The medical writer and editor serves a multi-functional role, providing project consultation, content development, and communications expertise across various therapeutic specialties in hematology and oncology. Major responsibilities include literature research, proposal/publication planning, editorial review of highly technical grant proposals, clinical/scientific journal reports, and reviews/book chapters. Additionally, accurate copyediting, fact-checking, and proofreading of scientific/clinical content are important components of this position, requiring a proficient understanding and expert knowledge of American Medical Association (AMA) editorial style, as well as best practices guidelines for grant proposal writing and clinical/scientific reports.
80% Scientific/Medical Writing and Editing and Project Design Consultation Edits highly technical grants proposals and research reports for logical argument, clarity, flow of ideas, completeness, internal consistency, and organization Writes/rewrites text and reorganizes/eliminates text to create clear, well-structured documents Critiques visual displays of data Proofreads for grammar, style, fluency/vocabulary, word usage, and clarity Ensures that all documents comply with professional publication standards, grant application guidelines, and journal submission guidelines Prepares grant proposals and research manuscripts according to document guidelines. Provides project design consultation on grant proposal development Identifies research funding opportunities to ensure that the research idea is aligned with the funderâ™s mission and strategic goals Reviews early drafts of the proposed research plan for clarity, logical argument, and technical feasibility Conducts brainstorming sessions to facilitate and critique project design Provides strategic advice on responding to reviewer comments and resubmitting a revised proposal Works with the Hematology T32 training grant program leaders to write and edit grant progress reports and renewals for the NIH 15% HOT Program Support Teaches seminars on writing in the sciences, writing abstracts, designing visual displays of data, oral and poster presentations of scientific research, and critical appraisal of the medical literature to HOT and DOM postdoctoral T32 trainees Provides the same writing and editing services for T32 trainees, demonstrating communication expertise to early career researchers 5% Professional Development Identifies and participates in professional development/educational opportunities that will enhance this positionâ™s ability to perform the required duties. This may include technical training in science communication, community outreach and extension, incorporating and applying accessibility and inclusion in science communication

Preferred Qualifications: Masterâ™s degree in applicable field; or PhD in the Medical Sciences At least 3-5 years related grant writing experience and/or training Experience in the submission of federal grants An interest in or familiarity with clinical research
