Journal of the American Academy of Audiology
The American Academy of Audiology is looking for an experienced audiology professional to take the helm of the Journal of the American Academy of Audiology, beginning in June 2023.

Overall Responsibilities
The Editor-In-Chief (EIC):
- Is responsible for the content of The Journal of the American Academy of Audiology.
- Acts as the spokesperson for the journal.
- Works to keep current with, and aware of, the needs of the journal’s audience (e.g., by attending meetings, reading competing publications, conference proceedings and more).
- Optimizes the quality and usefulness of journal content.
- Prepares quarterly reports on the peer-review process for the Academy board of directors.
- Helps to select editorial board members, regularly reviews their performance and replaces members as needed.
- Selects the journal’s Deputy Editor-In-Chief (DEIC).
- Selects the journal’s Assistant Editor for Continuing Education. This assistant editor works with the journal’s managing editor to select one article in each issue (and one back-up article) to be used as the basis of the continuing education unit (CEU) questions that appear in eight issues (at a minimum) per calendar year. The Assistant Editor for Continuing Education reviews the submitted CEU questions for each issue before they are sent to the publisher for publication.
Content-Development Responsibilities
The EIC:
- Works with the journal managing editor and the journal publisher to:
- Publish a current and compelling peer-reviewed information source for the audiology profession.
- Create, implement and/or update ongoing plans designed to encourage and increase article submissions to the journal.
- Develop publication guidelines as needed.
- Solicits manuscripts on a regular and ongoing basis.
- Develops special issues on topics of interest to the journal’s audience, identifying and bringing special-issue editors on board.
- Writes editorials for each issue (The EIC and DEIC may choose to provide editorials for alternate issues. The editorials for special issues are typically written by the special-issue editor).
Publication-Process Responsibilities
The EIC:
- Maintains the flow of papers through the peer-review tracking system, from submission through review, to assignment to an issue:
- Assigns reviewers and re-reviewers.
- Evaluates reviews.
- Makes the final decision on the disposition of each manuscript.
- Responds to author requests for information.
- Reviews, responds to and publishes letters to the editor.
- Reviews each article before online (eFirst) publication.
- Reviews each issue of the journal before publication.
More About the EIC Role
The JAAA Editor-In-Chief (EIC) reports to the Academy’s executive director but works day to day with the Academy’s editorial and communications staff.
Roles of the EIC and DEIC
The Editor-In-Chief and Deputy Editor-In-Chief (DEIC) work together to ensure that all responsibilities are covered. The DEIC reports to the EIC. The EIC will select the DEIC.
EIC and DEIC Contracts
The EIC and DEIC positions are part-time, three-year contract positions beginning June 1, 2023. A stipend is provided for each position. The first contract will run from June 1, 2023, through December 31, 2026; a training and overlap work period with the current editors will take place from June through December 2023. Subsequent contracts will begin on January 1 and end on December 31.
About JAAA
Thieme Medical Publishers publishes JAAA, in online and print versions, handling all aspects of production after journal articles are approved for publication through peer review and by the EIC/DEIC. The journal is published 10 times a year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July/August, September, October and November/December.
To ensure the quickest possible publication, journal articles are published in several formats:
- Online as Author Accepted Manuscripts (AAM), in their originally submitted format, as soon as they are accepted for publication.
- Online in an eFirst version (published ahead of their assigned issue), as soon as they are copyedited and ready for publication.
- In a compiled issue, both online and in print.
The journal is available online at no cost as a member benefit to all members of the American Academy of Audiology. Thieme handles subscriptions to the journal for institutions and for non-members.
Requirements
The successful EIC candidate will be:
- An audiologist with at least 10 years of experience in the field of audiology.
- Active in the field of audiology, with experience in clinical, research and academic settings in, and related to, the field.
- An individual with an established reputation in hearing-health care.
- An experienced scientist who can help the journal face today’s opportunities and challenges and prepare for the opportunities and challenges of the future.
- An individual who can build constructive relationships with experts in the profession in a range of specialty areas and who maintains a visible presence in the audiology community at conferences and in other interactions.
- Experienced in the peer-review process, as an author, reviewer and/or editor.
- A member of the American Academy of Audiology.
In addition, the successful candidate must have:
- A PhD and other academic or professional credentials relevant to the field.
