First Amendment Watch (FAW) is seeking a Researcher/Reporter to write and contribute to relevant content for the First Amendment Watch website, dedicated to covering contemporary controversies involving freedom of speech and press. The site, a publication of NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, publishes original legal and historical analysis of First Amendment conflicts as well as presenting commentary and third-party news content. Working alongside the managing editor, this position includes the ability to shape topics covered, expand storytelling formats, plan public events and shape, as well as analyze, the social media outreach.
FAW also produces original teaching materials on free speech and press issues for university professors and students. Launched in October 2017, the nonprofit receives foundation funding and NYU support for its operations. The Researcher/Reporter role is a full-time position with NYU employee benefits. It is grant-funded for at least a year, with the possibility of an extension contingent on satisfactory performance and additional foundation funding. The job is based at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at 20 Cooper Square, New York, N.Y.
Responsibilities of the Position:
- Research contemporary First Amendment issues, utilizing primary and secondary source material such as court opinions and law review articles.
- Research historical documents associated with the freedoms of speech and press from America's founding period forward to the present day.
- Research and write about decisions of state and federal courts pertaining to the First Amendment.
- Project management of the First Amendment Watch website.
- Research and write posts for First Amendment Watch as well as contribute to the weekly newsletter on current cases and controversies.
- Presentation of First Amendment Watch research, blog posts, teaching guides and other materials at public conferences.
- Presentation of First Amendment Watch research and other materials through social media and other relevant platforms.
- Presentation of First Amendment Watch work in multimedia, including podcasts, videos and live streaming.
- Collaboration with other organizations that work on First Amendment issues, including work on common documents and public events.
- Propose and initiate new editorial projects and partnerships that further the mission of First Amendment Watch.
- Plan events, including panel discussions and conferences.
Familiarity with First Amendment issues is helpful, as are excellent research, reporting and writing skills, an analytical ability and an entrepreneurial mindset. FAW functions as a mini-newsroom and the right person will be an important player in shaping the coverage. A bachelor's degree is required for this role and a master's is viewed favorably.
The starting salary for this position is in the $55,000 to $60,000 range and includes an NYU benefits package.
To apply, please submit:
- A customized cover letter describing your qualifications for this position and why it interests you. Please include topics of interest that you'd like to pitch and pursue which consider the current legal and political atmosphere;
