Overview Licensed to the Board of Trustees of San Diego State University, KPBS serves the greater San Diego community and other audiences with news, information, cultural, entertainment, arts, and educational programming. The KPBS Programming Department is responsible for creating memorable audience experiences across multiple platforms. KPBS Programming produces, acquires, schedules and releases audio and video content, which extends the public media brand and attracts large audiences who will become members of the station.
The Producer/Editor plays an important role in content creation for KPBS. The Producer/Editor utilizes their production, writing, technical and audio expertise to make content come to life and serve our audience. Primarily responsible for the production of the arts and culture podcast Port of Entry, as well as the technical, aesthetic, and programmatic components of other podcast, digital and radio content. The duties of this position require the incumbent to be capable of independent action, cooperating closely with and providing assistance to staff and performing well in stressful situations. This person will work under the supervision of the Operations Manager to meet the ever-changing needs of our multiple content operations. This position will perform a range of audio production and operations tasks for assigned projects including producing content, high level editing, and sound design. The position also includes production, operations and technical tasks for local in-house productions, field productions, and various shows. The role will include interaction with various departments' production needs, interaction with outside people in the community, Explore producers, special events, and production coordination. The position also requires various platform operations duties and coordination.
This position is covered under the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreement with KPBS.
Produce audio content including but not limited to Port of Entry, as well as other podcasts, radio content, promos and spots, on-air fundraising and corporate development elements, and any other audio production needs as determined by the strategic planning process. Producing includes but is not limited to concept development, booking and interviewing guests, coordinating topics, managing workflow, collaborating with hosts and other technical staff, scripting, field recording, tracking, editing, mixing and sound design.
Coordinate tasks throughout the production cycle (pre-production, production, and post-production) for all projects as assigned.
Script writing and familiarity with writing for broadcast or podcast.
Interviewing subjects, ability to interact with content subjects and pull out their stories.
Ensure high quality studio and field recordings, quality ambient noise, track host sessions, studio interviews, and editing and final-mixing a complete and professional-level product.
Have advanced knowledge of multitrack audio editing techniques, compression, sample rates, automation, and digital audio file formats, to export audio in various formats for broadcast, online streaming, and on-demand downloads.
Coordinate and monitor the podcast audience, platform, RSS feeds, digital and NPR One content, as well as develop and implement strategies to improve existing digital and podcast platforms, workflow, and audience reach.
Keep abreast of new industry products, technical parameters, production standards, and provide guidance on best practices for additional KPBS and Explore podcast/audio content.
Consult and coordinate with other departments on their requests to clarify and meet their specific needs and wants.
Reserve studios, acquire equipment, and coordinate personnel for projects.
Serve as backup technical producer for any live radio or other recording or production needs.
Have the ability to multitask, plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands and deadlines are involved.
Must be able to utilize and be guided by the KPBS mission statement and strategic plan.
Represent KPBS Programming at community and business functions.
Qualifications Knowledge & Experience
5+ years or more complex audio production experience for podcast or radio.
Expert proficiency of a full range of production techniques and the various equipment used in advanced audio production and editing including Adobe Audition in both studio and field environments.
Ability to apply techniques used throughout the production cycle: Preproduction, production and post-production.
Knowledge of industry-standard loudness targets for podcast/broadcast content.
Knowledge of radio, podcast and digital platform operations and other broadcast industry standards of operations.
Ability to manage and monitor multiple audio sources on mixing board throughout live board shift and follow a clock or rundown.
Efficiently manage zoom calls, telephone lines and patch phone guests/callers through mixing board for on-air or production purposes.
Knowledge of CMS/Grove for web and podcast posting.
Knowledge of broadcast automation systems.
Highly motivated self-starter with a high energy level and strong interpersonal skills.
Understand and follow posted work rules and procedures.
Ability to relate well to others within the work environment.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Bachelors Degree in Media, Radio/Television, Communications, Audio/Video Production, Sound Design, or other related field
Ear for non-linear, narrative, digital editing, including pacing and scoring dialog with music.
Experience with 3rd party plug-ins for EQ, compression, noise reduction, and mastering.
Production management and strategic planning experience.
Technical writing and process documentation development experience.
Advanced audio and video and sound design production skills.
Ability to travel internationally, U.S. Passport.
Diverse lived experience in a multi-cultural community.
Bilingual, Spanish preferred.
Knowledge and understanding of public media.
