The Technical Editor II/III position will provide support to the Director of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, the Principal Investigator of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network Laboratory Center, and the Director of the Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Division, within the planning, writing, editing and production of a variety of scientific, technical and executive documents. Project activities will include organization, production, editing and finalization of highly specialized technical and scientific material for publication, including manuscripts for scientific journals, grant applications, presentations, and communications, etc. This will involve written text, formatting and scientific graphics/illustration and will require oversight to ensure that all materials meet established guidelines and standards of appearance and content.

This person will work under limited supervision and use discretion within existing guidelines and standards; final review/authorization of materials will be made by the supervisor and/or her designated scientific staff.

• Prepare outlines and draft sections of scientific manuscripts including writing of materials and methods sections, preparing tables and graphs in coordination with the scientific staff doing the studies. Prepare the manuscripts according the style guides of the submitting journal. Manage submission of the manuscript and follow through to final publication.
• Coordinate and edit revisions to book chapters, manuscripts, articles, reports and slide presentation materials of a highly technical nature.
• Coordinate documentation preparation with publication deadlines, grant deadlines, collaboration efforts and other projects for the supervisor and related faculty/senior staff within the laboratory and administrative program.
• Review, edit and retype grants and grant-related documents. Ensure that documents are in proper format and complete. Work with upper administration to prepare final submissions.
• Assist with written material for the Division including divisional webpages, newsletters, strategic plans, announcements, departmental posters, etc.
• Produce high-quality tables, figures and/or graphics for publications and presentation.
• Recommend edits on written materials to improve readability, coherence, accuracy, grammar and conformity to internal and publishing standards of style.
• Format and convert documents according to established standards.
• Develop and maintain templates.
• Maintain reference database and filing system of Program resources including, but not limited to: professional CVs and Biosketches, Other Support Information, Manuscripts, Endnote and other documentation. Ensure that all information is up to date, as needed.
• Gain concurrence of author on edited materials; make further revisions as required.
• Copy-edit and proofread scientific manuscripts and coordinate journal submission.
• Review professional journals and scientific literatureto stay abreast of new requirements in technical writing field.
• Review scientific illustration software programs to seek improved graphic performance and illustration.
• Execute completion of projects in a timely manner and prior to deadlines, maintaining flexible work hours to complete projects on time.
• Provide other technical and administrative support as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Level II

• Requires masters or PhD degree in a scientific field directly related to the department/program.
• Minimum of three years analytical and writing experience in a health care, research, or science academic environment required.
• Knowledge of cellular immunology and medical terminology.
• Ability to handle multiple projects at one time.
• Experience in publishing and editing.
• Strong demonstrated technical writing skills.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Attention to detail.

Level III

• Expertise in Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
• Expertise with high quality scientific graphics.
• Experience with bibliographic software.
• Familiarity with scientific research methods,
• Extensive knowledge with medical terminology and cellular immunology.
• Prepare and have writtenmanuscripts for science and technicaljournals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD degree in Science (Immunology, Biochemistry, Biology, etc) or within an extensive science background.
• Certification in Technical Writing.
• Experience with grant preparation.
• Expertise with Endnote and Adobe software.
• Prism graphics experience.
