Position Summary

The Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School is seeking a full-time Report Editor for a 6-month position with renewal contingent on funding and performance. The Report Editor will oversee academic and journalistic publications from research fellows. The ideal candidate is a dynamic editor with deep knowledge of the intersection of journalism and technology, and experience editing both journalistic and academic publications. 

The Report Editor will work closely with the Director and Research Director of the Tow Center to develop high quality, timely, and accessible publications. The Report Editor will oversee the publication and distribution of Tow Center research reports and briefs, and will run Tow???s vertical at Columbia Journalism Review, from commissioning articles to editing and writing for the site. The goal is to make the research of the Center visible and accessible to the journalistic community it serves, and to provide insight, reporting, and commentary of the highest standard about the constantly developing relationship between journalism and technology. Successful applicants are likely to be an experienced editor and writer with a proven track record in web publishing and rigorous ability to edit academic writing. 

Responsibilities

Oversee publication process and deadlines of Tow research outputs; contribute substantive structural edits and copy edits for final reports.

Commission, edit, and produce editorial content related to our research. Work with a network of past and present Tow researchers to produce content. There is an occasional opportunity to write short updates, where appropriate, as well as longer in-depth pieces. 

Identify and cultivate relationships with news organizations, Columbia University schools and projects, and other entities that help to leverage the reach of Tow Center's work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, as well as 3-5 years related experience.

The candidate should have experience editing longform material, excellent communication skills, and a deep knowledge of digital journalism. Candidates should possess creative flair and ideas for developing the journalistic presence of the Tow Center, as well experience in translating technical/academic writing to a wider audience. Flexibility, judgement and initiative are prerequisites for this post. 

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree is preferred 

An understanding of the Tow Center's reputation as an international teaching and research facility within the world of journalism is a strong plus.
