JHU WSE Energetics Research Group is seeking a Journal Managing Editor who will support the technical writing, editorial review, and publication of documents for ERG, a center operated by the Whiting School of Engineering. ERG is the U.S. national resource for worldwide research; data; information; and analysis of energetics, explosives and chemical, electrical and nuclear propulsion for missile, space, and gun propulsion systems.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Publication Management (90%):
Serve as Managing Editor for the annual JANNAF Journal of Propulsion and Energetics, a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the publication of scholarly work that falls under export-control guidelines and DOD directives for the control of militarily critical technical data
Provide editing, typesetting, and final formatting of all manuscripts
Reach out to freelance copyeditors for assistance and coordinate work assignments, as needed
Coordinate with authors to ensure adherence to journal guidelines, including securing of necessary DoD approvals for publication and copyright, and interface with local printing subcontractor
Establish author guidelines, resource materials, and recommendations for overall format and content of the journal
Recruit volunteer authors and editors and develop ongoing working relationships with them
Serve as editor for the JANNAF News, an industry newsletter distributed to over 5,500 individuals and posted to the JANNAF website
Coordinate and write articles
Develop and manage project schedules for both Journal and JANNAF News
Provide editorial review and comment on ERG technical reports, manuscripts, and proposals
Lead editorial meetings and plan editorial calendars and schedules; generate new story ideas for the JANNAF News
Represent the Journal at meetings and conduct outreach for the Journal
Other Duties as Assigned (10%):
Coordinating and transferring files related to work assignments for Copy Editors, Associate Editors, Reviewers, and Authors
Assist ERG Communications Team with mass email distribution; writing communications for JANNAF and other mission areas, representing ERG at events, as needed, and completing communications/administrative reports as needed for JANNAF and other mission areas
Internal & External Contacts:
Internal: Advise/Consult with staff from all areas of ERG. Engineers and Admin staff who author documents, Copy Editors (casual staff) who edit and credit galleys in Adobe InDesign, and partner with managers from Communications, IT, Admin, and the ERG Director to define, collect and finalize content for each edition
External: Advise/Consult with external volunteers: Authors, Associate Editors, Reviewers, Editor in Chief, Liaison to JANNAF Executive Committee
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Education or a related field required with 5 years of professional writing and editing experience in a technical or scientific field
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop and related graphics tools
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to work under pressure of deadlines; manage multiple priorities effectively; and be capable of working effectively in a dynamic office environment
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Must be able to work independently
Ability to set deadlines for multiple tasks, and to keep all volunteer workers and self on schedule
Permanent employment is contingent upon obtaining a U.S. Government personal security clearance within a reasonable period of time
Occasional travel may be required

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
