Responsibilities:
The New School for Social Research (NSSR), one of five academic divisions of The New School, seeks an experienced, highly motivated, socially engaged university administrator to support the faculty and students of two of our academic departments.
The NSSR, which enrolls over 700 students and offers the M.A. and Ph.D. in the social sciences, philosophy and history, is known internationally for its commitment to progressive ideas and its rigorous, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning. This is a Local 1205 Clerical Unit position subject to the terms and conditions agreed to in the Union Contract between Teamsters Local 1205 and The New School.
Reporting to Chair of the Politics Department this position will provide administrative support to three department Chairs. In cooperation with the team of senior secretaries at the NSSR, and the Office of the Dean, the Senior Secretary has specific responsibilities that include the following:
- Provide general secretarial support to the department including, but not limited to, scheduling appointments and office hours for faculty members, distributing department mail, maintaining office copy machine and office supplies, coordinating mailing to students and other outside parties, organize meetings and prepare agendas, coordinating room assignment for faculty offices, department seminars, orals and dissertation defenses;
- Coordinate and maintain files for faculty searches;
- Handle travel arrangements and payments for all visitors (including guest lecturers, visiting scholars and professors and faculty search candidates);
- Prepare all check disbursements, purchase requisitions, and other requests for department activity;
- Assist the Department Chair and departmental faculty with the preparation of online reimbursement requests and forms;
- Prepare and arrange course information for the GF bulletin and registration schedule builders;
- Prepare all M.A. and Ph.D. qualifying examinations;
- Post class grades, grades changes, and incomplete grades;
- Liaison with the Office of the Dean, Records, the Registrar, and other University offices regarding department business;
- Supervise work-study and other student assistants;
- Administer all aspects of graduate and undergraduate scheduling building and attend training sessions related to software and data systems;
- Administer all aspects of Admission work for the Politics, Liberal Studies and CPCJ Departments;
- Administer all aspects of event planning, and, the accreditation process for degree-granting programs in the department;
- Perform special projects as assigned by the Chair

Minimum Qualifications:
- Two or more years' experience in an office setting.
- Excellent customer service, communications and organizational skills, and ability to work autonomously
- Strong computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive and G Suite, with knowledge of Banner preferred.
- Ability to adhere to university COVID-19 policy and requirements.

B.A. degree preferred
